How this is calculated
- Self-employment tax (1099): 15.3% on net earnings up to the Social Security wage base ($176,100 in 2025), then 2.9% above. Half of SE tax is deductible from federal AGI.
- W2 employee FICA: 7.65% paycheck withholding (6.2% Social Security up to the wage base + 1.45% Medicare).
- Federal income tax: 2025 single-filer brackets, applied after standard deduction ($15,000).
- State income tax: top marginal rate from Tax Foundation 2025 data. Applied to taxable income — accurate for high earners who reach the top bracket, slightly overstated for lower incomes.
- Not included: health insurance, retirement contributions (401k, SEP-IRA), QBI deduction, local/city taxes, malpractice tail.
